Beacon of Light will shine a spotlight on female football as Sunderland AFC Women take on Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne Derby.
Our ‘Girls Football Showcase’ will take place from 11:30am until 1:30pm on Sunday 29 March, offering a range of pre-match activities before The Lasses kick off at the Stadium of Light at 2pm.
Come along to show your support to the girls as they take part in a small-sided tournament on the Beacon’s outdoor pitches, celebrating grassroots girls’ football in the region.
Visitors can also enjoy food and refreshments from the Yard Nine café, the perfect place to fuel up before heading across to the stadium to watch another Sunderland side go in search of a derby day win.
Foundation of Light will be running a Matchday Lottery, giving fans the chance to win a signed Sunderland AFC Women shirt, alongside additional fundraising activities and prize draws.
All proceeds will support the Together Through Sport campaign, which brings together the region’s leading sporting foundations and the North East Housing Partnership. The initiative aims to ensure every child has the opportunity to play, grow and thrive through sport.
Currently, one in three children in the North East are growing up in poverty, meaning many miss out on the benefits of physical activity. Together Through Sport is helping to tackle this by providing free holiday courses and sports sessions in schools, ensuring access to sport for all.
