It was a weekend to remember at the Beaconof Light as we hosted our first ever boxing event.
A sold-out event saw 1,400 people cheer on ‘one of our own’ as Sunderland’s Josh Kelly picked up a third round win against Placido Ramirez in the main event.
The win puts Kelly into the queue for the IBO World Super Welterweight Title. Kelly is also gunning for some heavyweight domestic showdowns after the impressive knockout, mentioning names like Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr.
Speaking live from the Beacon, Kelly said: “It was destiny, the city showed up, and we painted the town red and white tonight. Everything clicked like a well-oiled machine. I’m gunning for the big local scraps or a shot at the world title. You know the names on my list – Eubank and Benn – I’m right here, ready and waiting after that kind of show-stopping performance. Bring them to my backyard.”
From the undercard, Newcastle’s Dan Toward beat Nikolas Dzurnak on points and cruised to a 2-0 professional record.
British boxing’s rising star, Tom Welland. knocked down Yuri Zanoli in the opening round before picking up the win with a 60-53 points decision.
Beacon of Light Events Manager, Fiona Murphy said: “It was a great night for the Beacon and the 1,400 people who packed it out. We have really enjoyed working with Wasserman and hope we can host more events like this in the future.”

We are excited to host the Utilita Football Festival at the Beacon of Light on Thursday 31 July which will be a day of free activities for all the family.
Sunderland's newest landmark is one step closer to officially being named as voting opens for the people of the city to choose from the shortlisted options.
