Northern Powergrid opens new learning space at Beacon of Light with special guest attendance

Northern Powergrid has officially opened a new learning space at Sunderland’s community hub, The Beacon of Light, located just a stone’s throw from its flagship Riverside House office.

A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on 17 March, led by Northern Powergrid’s Director of People and Change, alongside representatives from the Beacon of Light and special guest Sir Bob Murray CBE, founder of the Foundation of Light and lifelong advocate for education and opportunity in the North East.

The multifunctional room will provide a space for learning, whether that be nurturing the growth of the current workforce at Northern Powergrid or building the skills of the future.

This investment reflects the company’s commitment to attracting new talent and offering opportunities for people who want to join the ‘People behind the Power’ and help shape the region’s energy future.

Jodie Coe, Director of People and Change at Northern Powergrid said: “Opening this new learning space is another step in our commitment to growing the skills our region needs, today and in the future.

“We’re focused on breaking down barriers and creating real pathways for people to access secure, fulfilling and meaningful jobs right here in the North.

“By investing in places like the Beacon of Light, we’re strengthening the talent pipeline for our industry, helping local people move into high‑quality careers and inspiring the next generation to see the energy sector as a route to opportunity, stability and progression in the communities they call home.”

The Beacon of Light is a unique community hub offering sport, education, wellbeing and event spaces for people of all ages and backgrounds, with all proceeds supporting Sunderland AFC’s official charity, the Foundation of Light.

Sir Bob Murray CBE  added: “This investment brings real, tangible opportunities into the Beacon of Light for our communities. It will support learning, skills development and employability for people of all ages, while strengthening the link between local people and career opportunities within the energy sector. It’s a fantastic example of partnership delivering meaningful change.”

Northern Powergrid’s sponsorship of a dedicated room within the Beacon of Light will help strengthen this vital community work across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham.

Northern Powergrid is looking for passionate people to help power the region’s energy future, offering a supportive and innovative working environment and a wide range of career pathways.
