Inspiring youngster surprised with special gift at Beacon

After successfully completing the Rickshaw Challenge in October of last year, Alexander Walker was surprised with a special Christmas present at the Beacon of Light.

The teenager, 16, from Sunderland, completed a cycling challenge in support of Children In Need, hoping to raise life-changing funds for projects throughout the country.

Joined by Matt Baker MBE, Alexander participated in a relay-style ride, which witnessed five inspiring young people embark on a selection of the journey, cycling through their respective hometowns.

Roared on by his family and friends as well as Black Cats defender Dan Ballard, the youngster set off from the Stadium of Light before crossing the finishing line in Durham.

As a reward for Alexander’s achievements and being an inspiration to others, his parents purchased one of the Foundation’s unique boot tiles, a stunning brush steel design which serves as the perfect present for any Black Cats fans or a great way to celebrate a special moment.

Scott Walker, father of Alexander, has been encouraging other people to purchase their very own boot tile. He said: “We bought Alexander a boot tile for his achievement, something good to celebrate for what he had done.

“I would encourage people to buy them for various reasons. They serve so many purposes and they look so good on the wall. This is something for him to look back at every time he comes to the Beacon of Light.”

Scott also couldn’t hide his pride when reflecting on Alexander’s accomplishments. “He’s done exceptionally well. Even the Rickshaw Challenge itself, it’s been fantastic for him.

“It was a great opportunity which we thought we would never get to do.”

After being diagnosed with autism aged two, Alexander often struggled to connect with others, however, through the help of the official charity of Sunderland AFC, Alexander is now a regular visitor to the Beacon where he participates in the Foundation’s Disability Multisports and Disability Football activities.

The weekly activities have enabled Alexander to make new friends, learn new skills, increase his independence, have fun and grow in confidence.

Alexander was quick to highlight how much he enjoys coming to the Beacon. “I thoroughly enjoy visiting the Beacon. I like everyone that attends and it’s good for your mental and physical health.

Reflecting on his initial thoughts when he was first presented with his boot tile, Alexander added: “I was absolutely over the moon. I was shocked out of my life seeing that.

“It’s absolutely outstanding and I’ve looked at it many times.”

Become one of our very special Friends of the Foundation through the purchase of one of our beautiful and unique boot tiles.
