New Health Hub opens at Sunderland’s Beacon of Light
A new ‘Health Hub’ has opened at Sunderland’s Beacon of Light, offering a range of free sessions designed to help the community improve their health and wellbeing.
The Beacon will light up green on World Suicide Prevention Day on Tuesday 10 September as part of Suicide Prevention Week.
Suicide Prevention Week runs every year throughout the week corresponding to Suicide Prevention Day, building on the campaign to inform and engage about suicide prevention and the warning signs of suicide.
1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health issue each year; that's around 7,500 in a full capacity Stadium of Light!
The Beacon of Light is home to the Foundation of Light, who run various initiatives to support mental wellbeing.
These include the Game of II Halves suicide prevention programme aimed at men 16+, the Believe peer-to-peer women’s support group, and Wear Together sessions which supports those aged over 55 to keep social and active.
We are also proud to host Andy’s Man Club Sunderland every Monday from 7pm, Space North East on Wednesdays from 7pm, and the SAFC Branch Liaison Council Matchday Mental Health Hub with Washington Mind at our Fan Zones.

Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week, Beacon of Light highlighted a range of vital support services from across the region in the pre-match Fan Zone ahead of Sunderland AFC’s game against Manchester United.
Supporters and the local community can now get even more from every visit to the Beacon of Light with the launch of Beacon of Light Membership.
